FOREWORD by Abstract Rude. Alluding to, referencing and imagining the plights of our Ancestors and those who have made great impact in our lives has been a constant theme for this collection of hip-hop artists. I personally have probably never released an album where some Black champion of our past isn’t mentioned. So when I was approached by Malik Cooper of The Suitors, a production trio out of Oakland (alongside Dakh Jones & Paolo Tsui), to work on a project embodying the lives of Black Historical Figures… well it was right up my alley. And other than Myka, Mistah F.A.B & Davey D, who he already had on board, I knew just who to approach to help pull it off. People like Medusa The Gangsta Goddess of the LA Underground, Propaganda and Sojourn of Tunnel Rats, Vursatyl of Quannum Projects, 2X Back-to-Back Project Blowed SBRC Champ Blak King, Ric Scales of San Diego, A. Billi Free of New Mexico, my cousin and poet Vigilant Leighrick, as well as Bonus features by Poetic S. of Project Blowed and OG Goodlifer Tomeicko (Watts 1965). All of whom I’ve been working with and/or a fan of their songwriting over the years ”and they did not disappoint.” For most of us, Black History has always been a month in February where we learn some cool facts about our past in school and/or church, but as with any learning, music and song enhances a person’s ability to absorb the content in a more impressive and enjoyable way. This is why the musician/MC/songwriter has such power and a huge responsibility for what we release into the world. Music, if used as a tool can educate not only the youth, but people of all ages to live lives of purpose and dignity, and fight for social justice. This album pays tribute to past Hip Hop Artists who used their voices to edutain with rejuvenating themes like “Fight The Power” by Public Enemy, “Black To The Future” by Def Jef and “You Must Learn” by KRS One & Boogie Down Productions. I guarantee this album to be a solid tool for classrooms, parents wanting to teach, and/or for those brushing up on old knowledge that has faded from our frontal lobe. We made it fun, and most importantly for us, we made it dope! You can vibe and rock to it. Reimagine that, it can be cool to learn about Black History! So either close your eyes and take the journey, or read along while listening with the lyrics provided. Either way you’ll be more than subliminally re-educated.
