When you think of the Golden Era of Hip Hop, you envision heavy beats, lyrical mastery, and rich, soulful loops. Some say that era is over—OXGN (pronounced Oxygen) is here to prove otherwise. Comprised of North West London’s MCs and producers Steve Austin and Souperman BAM BAM. OXGN embodies the pure essence of Hip Hop, blending rhyme, rhythmic speech, and street vernacular into high-energy performances that transport listeners to the heart of the genre’s roots. Hailing from the birthplace of UK Hip Hop, North West London’s Steve Austin (Gus Modeste) is a true pioneer of the genre. Austin’s career began in 1982 as MC Def G, contributing to the early UK Hip Hop scene through DJing, MCing, B-Boying, and Graffiti. He gained early recognition with the legendary group The Powerlords before embarking on a solo journey that led to collaborations with key figures like Dr. Bunny Bread and the formation of the group T.W.I.N.S. In 1999, Austin co-founded Uprock Recordings, a label that played a crucial role in the development of UK Hip Hop, producing hits like “When Robots Go To War” featuring the late Mercury-nominated, MC Ty. With a career spanning over four decades, Steve Austin remains a vital force in the UK music scene, continuing to innovate and influence new generations of artists. North West London’s Stephen ‘BAM BAM’ Busette, also known as Souperman BAM BAM, is a pioneering figure in the UK hip-hop scene, blending his distinct baritone voice and innovative wordplay with the jazz-infused beats that defined the 90s golden era. From his early days with Scientists of Sound, til now. BAM BAM’s career is a testament to his artistic evolution. Their journey began after the loss of MC Ty during the global pandemic, BAM and Steve Austin, alongside legendary producer Daz-I-Kue (formerly of Bugz In the Attic), created the protest anthem “I Can’t Breathe” in response to the Black Lives Matter movement. The collaboration sparked the creation of OXGN, the formation of Grown Up Music Records (GUM Records) and the release of the acclaimed “For Connoisseurs and Fly Kids” EP trilogy, earning them praise within the underground hip-hop and alternative music communities. Now, in 2025, BAM BAM and Steve Austin, alongside Daz-I-Kue in the sonics supervision seat, have reunited once again to craft a new, deeply personal project: “Elders Prophecy”. This latest album reflects the trio’s maturation, exploring themes such as family, loss, mental health, and love, while maintaining the gritty, jazz-infused sound that has become their hallmark. With contributions from long-time collaborators A Guevara (formerly J-Blast from Scientists of Sound) and Cymon Temp (formerly of Espionage & The Whole Inna Natural Sound aka T.W.I.N.S), “Elders Prophecy”, as well as features from supreme vocalist Joy Farrukh (formerly of Incognito), who is at the moment causing a big stir on The Voice UK and cameos from top visionary film director and all round creative talent, Jeymes Samuel (The Harder They Fall/The Book Of Clarence), promises to deliver a powerful and thought-provoking narrative with impeccable production and unmatched lyricism. Steve Austin and BAM BAM’s story continues to unfold, marked by their passion for the art form and desire to push boundaries. With “Elders Prophecy”, OXGN cements their position as a vital voice in the evolution of hip-hop. credits released February 3, 2025 Produced by Steve Austin, Bam Bam Superman, Bunny Bread, Daz-I-Kue
