On November 10, 2022 my son and I attended a discussion at The Grammy Museum. This panel consisted of the producers, A&R’s, musicians, and engineers that assisted Kendrick Lamar in creating Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. After this event during the ride home Nas’s new project Kings Disease 3 just dropped and playing during the ride home a conversation began after track 14. This track was titled, “The First Time”, and Nas was recalling moments in which fans were telling him the first time they heard his music. This prompted my son to ask me when was the first time I heard Nas. So, I told him the story, after this convo about 2:50 in the morning I was thinking about this convo and decided to write a 40+ bar verse recalling the day I purchased Illmatic. I didn’t record the song until March 4, 2023 but, after recording my videographer from Toronto convinced me to shoot a music video for it. So, we chose Sweet Chicks on Fairfax a restaurant that Nas co-owns as the shooting location and, of course my son was in the video because had he not asked that question this song would not exist. So for 2:50 take this journey with me and hear how I was first introduced to one of the greatest emcees of our time, how I popped in Illmatic cassette tape in my walkman while riding the subway train. Went on a trip in my mind through QueeensBridge and Nas childhood while riding the entire subway line missing my stop from being caught up in the moment.
